Adaptogens 101

Ashwagandha, maca, holy basil — what the research says, in plain language.

Adaptogens are plants said to help the body 'adapt' to stress. The word is everywhere — in lattes, powders, and promises. Behind the marketing is a smaller, more honest story: a handful of herbs with genuine research, a larger handful with interesting but early evidence, and a lot of noise in between.

01The honest evidence, herb by herb

  • Ashwagandha — the best-studied of the group. Small trials suggest meaningful reductions in perceived stress and cortisol, with possible sleep benefits. Avoid in pregnancy and with thyroid conditions without guidance.
  • Maca — a Peruvian root studied mostly for libido and mood; some trials show benefit, and it contains no hormones despite the 'hormone balancing' label it often carries.
  • Holy basil (tulip basil / tulsi) — traditional use for stress and resilience; human trials are few but encouraging for stress perception.
  • Rhodiola — studied for fatigue and mental performance under stress; moderate evidence, taken earlier in the day as it can be stimulating.

02Reading the label like an adult

Supplements are not regulated like medicines, so potency varies wildly between brands. Look for third-party tested products, standardised extracts, and doses matching those used in studies — not a proprietary blend where every ingredient hides behind a total.

And the rule that protects you most: adaptogens complement a foundation of sleep, food, and movement — they cannot substitute for it. An adaptogen on top of four-hour nights is a latte on a collapsing foundation.

03Who should be careful

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a thyroid or autoimmune condition, or taking psychiatric or thyroid medication, talk to a clinician or pharmacist before starting anything. 'Natural' describes the source of a molecule — never its safety profile.

Adaptogens are allies, not answers. The calmest women are rarely the ones taking the most — they are the ones sleeping, eating, and moving as if their nervous system mattered. Because it does.
